Travel to Brazil blossomed into record-breaking territory in 2024, led by a double-digit increase in international visitors, including nearly 700,000 travelers from the United States, government officials said this week.

Brazil hosted 6,657,377 international travelers in 2024, a 12.6 percent year-over year increase over 2023, according to combined data from the country¡¯s Ministry of Tourism, the national tourism agency (Embratur), and Brazil¡¯s Federal Police.

The 690,236 visitors who traveled to Brazil from the United States in 2024 represent the country¡¯s second-largest source of travelers behind Brazil¡¯s 1.95 million visitors from Argentina.

S?o Paulo served as the country¡¯s main gateway in 2024, with 2,207,015 visitors arriving via the city¡¯s entry points. Rio de Janeiro (1,513,235 visitors) ranked second, followed by Parana (894,536) and Rio Grande do Sul (879,412). Two-thirds of international visitors arrived by plane last year, officials said.

Several Brazilian states recorded significant visitor increases in 2024, including Roraima (a 97 percent visitor increase), Santa Catarina (71.7 percent), Bahia (52.8 percent) and Par¨¢ (47.4 percent).

In all, international visitors spent $6.62 billion in Brazil through November of 2024, a 5.3 percent increase over 2023 and the highest for the period since 1995, surpassing the figure achieved in 2014 when Brazil hosted the FIFA World Cup.

The 2024 visitor arrivals were boosted by the country¡¯s Carnival celebrations, which Embratur officials projected would hosted 200,000 international tourists who contributed $200 million in revenue to the South American nation.

Brazil¡¯s Carnival traditionally extends from five days to an entire week in cities ranging from Rio de Janeiro to Salvador de Bahia.

Through a national tourism plan extending through 2027, Brazil is targeting more than 8.1 million annual visitors. Officials project Brazil¡¯s airline capacity will total 7.48 million seats during the 2024/2025 season, a 19 percent increase over 2023/2024.
